Pi Omega salutes our members who have served Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for more than 75 years.

Mrs. Maggie Sheffield Smartt

1913-2015

Our Beloved Diamond Member Maggie J. Sheffield Smartt, 102, became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on August 28, 2015 at the Hospice of Chattanooga. A Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mrs. Smartt was initiated into the Alpha Psi Chapter in 1935, serving 80 years on the local and regional level. She received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Tennessee State University and later earned a Masters Degree from Atlanta University. She did additional studies at Georgia State College, Hampton Institute, Virginia School of Arts Institution, University of Tennessee, Tennessee Technical University and Southern Missionary College. Mrs. Smartt was the first black President of the Chattanooga Retired Teachers Association. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Warren Chapel AME Church, where she was a faithful member.

 

Mrs. Doris Bruce Kelly

 

Mrs. Doris Bruce Kelly was initiated into the Alpha Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in 1938.  A Life Member, Mrs. Kelly has served Pi Omega in various capacities, including Vice President and Secretary.  She received her Bachelor of Science and Masters Degrees from Tennessee State University.  She did additional Postgraduate studies at the University of Tennessee, University of North Dakota, Middle Tennessee State University and Northwestern University.  She has attained numerous professional awards and continues to be an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
